hotel: the crosby opens next month

crosbyI just got word that the much anticipated first NY venture of the ever-stylish Tim and Kit Kemp will open in September. The Crosby Street Hotel in Soho will have 86 rooms and the Kemps are aiming for a GOLD LEED rating. I hope they get it. To create this kind of stylish space and go as green as they possibly can is to be applauded. I’m looking for an excuse to get back to New York and this may just be it!

house: home away from home

Some hotels resonate more than others. Casa Angelina is one of those that gets it right. Contemporary hotels seem to have become places where designers can express themselves in a way that is impossible in a residential project. Creativity can run wild….really wild. I was looking at Remodelista this morning and came across Casa Angelina. It clings to cliffs of the Amalfi coast. It’s not wild. It is extraordinarily restrained. The aesthetic is simple, elegant – a sophisticated white palette that embraces the beauty of the area rather than competing with it. And look what you can do with a large white planter…I do love an olive tree. Via the always wonderful Remodelista.

hotel: while we’re on the subject…

Hotel Missoni are launching in Edinburgh next month. Here are some sneak peeks of the rooms. It is impossible to tell what the hotel will be like but that gold couch is pretty sexy.missoni-hotelmisonihotel2misoni4misoni3

hotel: pool art

The weather is finally warming up … at least it is in LA (looks rather chilly in New York). I’m thinking pools … all kinds. But hotel pools are a special breed. And Thompson Hotels do them particularly well. I stayed at the Hollywood Roosevelt for an Australian Travel and Leisure story and was very impressed by the amazing David Hockney pool. Beautiful. And now Thompson LES , which opened last year, has created another cool pool.  Images appeared in November of Andy Warhol – at the bottom of the turquoise lap pool. This will be the first summer you can swim over “Andy Warhol: Portraits of the Artist as a Young Man,” by Gerard Malanga. Takes the whole art-in-hotel trend to another level. Pic via Chi Chi 212.
