Ponyo

Studio Ghibli, the Japanese animators that created Spirited Away have just released Ponyo. I took the kids to see it this week. What a beautiful film. I can’t find the images I want to post – there are extraordinary underwater sequences. The drawing is exceptional. It reminded me of Japanese woodcuts in the style of Hokusai (his Great Wave below). Plus the story is sweet enough for a 4 year old and exciting enough to keep a slightly jaded seven year old entranced.

When I was in New York I had lunch with Hugo Lindgren (check out his Moby Makeover piece – suffice to say he’s a brave man!) We had worked together years and years ago, on the ill-fated George magazine. Hugo was surprised I hadn’t heard of graphic designer Milton Glaser. I knew some of his work (I heart New York) but not all of it (I didn’t know he co-founded New York magazine). I can’t remember now if Hugo mentioned the documentary on Glaser but it comes out this summer and looks amazing. You can check out more here. And the NYTs review here. It’s finished now in NY but you can track the other locations for the film here.

A film by Michael Bernard and Gavin Froome tracks three generations of architects whose work has defined American West Coast style. The film is still in production and but you can follow what’s happening on the filmakers’ blog. Right now its set to be released in September. If the website is anything to go by it’ll be a must-see.
