Rohde work: furniture sale
Before Charles and Ray Eames there was Gilbert Rohde. He’s not a household name, but we think you’ll really like his work.
Rohde, who died in 1944, was an industrial designer and a key player in laying the groundwork for American Modernism. He was also an advisor to Herman Miller’s president DJ De Pree (see our Timeline for more).
What defined his work? A lovely organic line and a fascination with new materials. This month Rago, a New Jersey-based auction house, is holding a spectacular sale of modern furniture. It’s a strong collection and holds rare pieces of Rohde’s work including a very cool wall mirror framed in mahogany (above) and one of his rare time pieces (below).

object: tord boonjte necklace
I so admire Tord Boontje’s design aesthetic. He’s turned his whimsical nature driven cut outs into precious golden charms that can be heaped together as a necklace. Lovely. And not crazily expensive…$22 – $40 for 3. Via A+R’s Rose Apodaca’s blog.

hotel: the crosby opens next month
I just got word that the much anticipated first NY venture of the ever-stylish Tim and Kit Kemp will open in September. The Crosby Street Hotel in Soho will have 86 rooms and the Kemps are aiming for a GOLD LEED rating. I hope they get it. To create this kind of stylish space and go as green as they possibly can is to be applauded. I’m looking for an excuse to get back to New York and this may just be it!

furniture: tom dixon
There’s something about Tom Dixon’s designs that just draws me in. I like the idea of hanging mulptiples of his lights and this wire chair -called the Link Easy chair - is bold and beautiful.

furniture: bargain sofa
This lovely sectional covered in linen is less than $3000. I haven’t seen it in the flesh but it looks good on ‘paper’. I came across it on designer David Golinda’s new site. Thanks Rochelle for the heads up on Golinda. He’s got a great website and a very nice eye.

milan: still in the news
Better late than never. The New York Times finally jumps on the Milanese bandwagon. It was worth the wait. They corralled one of my most favourite photographers- Todd Selby to document 12 designers who are under 40 and made a splash at this year’s Milan Furniture Fair. Numbers always frame a story beautifully, don’t you think? We had covered a few of the designers in Belle – Sayaka Yamamoto and Boaz Cohen, BCXSY and Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay, Raw-Edges. But there were faces I hadn’t seen before. It’s always interesting to connect a person to their design. I like Maarten De Ceulaer’s (above) stack of leather suitcases much more now that I’ve seen what he looks like. He’s a 25-year-old graduate of the Design Academy Eindhoven. I saw the makeshift wardrobe at ICFF and was taken by its sculptural quality and its fine detailing. But seeing the designer and how young he is makes it even more impressive. Also one I will keep an eye on is Philippe Malouin. Ingenious shelving – it’s the George Nelson bench meets Home Depot (below).
